Welcome to class, It's a bright shinning day for you and I am Ayorinde and at the end of this lesson you should be able to define DRUG ABUSE and give examples of drugs that can be abused.

WHAT IS DRUG ABUSE?
1. Drug abuse is the act of taking drugs in a harmful manner.
Explanation: Whenever you take drug such as cigarette or cocaine in a harmful manner, you are abusing drug and thus it becomes drug abuse.
Now let's give another definition to drug abuse
2. Drug Abuse is an excessive, self-patterned or self-damaging use of drugs.
Explanation: Let's recall that drugs are chemical substances or xenobiotics. Drugs are expected to be used at a very low dose. Ok. Above normal dose which is the therapeutic dose that can help the body to fight against disease, it becomes toxic. Ok. This is what we are trying to say, When you take drug excessively and it is now damaging some part of the body, we say you have abuse that drug. Ok! Right.
Now let's also describe drug abuse like this
3. Drug abuse involves taking drugs without the doctor's prescription.
Explanation: when you take drug without doctor's prescription you are abusing that drug. For example you have paracetamol in your house, (are you getting what we are trying to say), and because you have a slight headache, you decided to take like five (5) or six (6) paracetamols at the same time when the liver (which is the detoxifying organ of the body) can not handle more than two of the paracetamols at a time. By doing this, you are loading your liver and your liver will have to create an alternative pathway for the elimination of this toxic paracetamol from the body. ARE YOU GETTING WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO EXPLAIN?
Now
4. Drug abuse involves using drugs repeatedly. When you use drug repeatedly, you are abusing that drug. Are you getting what we are trying to say?
5. Drug abuse also involves taking drugs for enjoyment and illegally.
Explanation: you just love to smoke cigarette, heroine and all other related drugs. Are you getting what we are trying to say? You might be enjoying yourself doing this but you are harming your body. We are still going to be talking about that in our next lesson.
Now quickly let's talk about the examples of drugs that can be abused.
The first one is beer. You see someone drinking all manner of beer or alcohol. Note that the body doesn't have more than 0.1% alcohol dehydrogenase (This is the enzyme that can detoxify alcohol). This enzyme is normally there to handle(detoxify) the alcohol that is being synthesized in the body. Are you getting what we are trying to say? So when you load this enzyme, it simply means you are harming your body.
Other examples of drugs that can be abused are wine; how about cocaine, you are smoking cocaine, its not good for your body and thus you are abusing that drug; what about marijuana; what about caffeine. Ok.
Another examples are valium; anabolic steroids; what about nicotine e.t.c
Alright.
With this we have come to the end of this lesson, see you in our next lesson as we talk more on Basic Science.
