This write-up translate a video on our you tube channel titled WHAT ARE DRUGS? You can watch the video below.
Wow! It's a bright shinning day for you and you are welcome to G and G Academy and at the end of this lesson you should be able to describe what drugs are, OK, and give the administration of drugs into the body.
What are drugs?
1. Drugs generally are chemical substances that affect the body in different ways. OK. Let me show you the diagram of how drug look like.
These are different category of drugs and don't forget they are chemical substances or we can even call them xenobiotic. Xenobiotics, OK, are chemical substances that are exterior to the body. Are you getting it?
Right. Now let's give you another description of drugs.
They cause changes in the body's activities. For example if you take paracetamol, O, and after some times the headache you having disappear, we say the paracetamol has caused a change in your body's activities. Are you getting what we are trying to establish.
Now this drug we are talking about normally occur in the natural form i.e we have drugs in the natural forms such as kola nuts; OK, your alcohol, when you take alcohol, it contains ethanol which is a drug; are you getting it? OK; your lemon; your lime; and what about your bitter leaf? OK. All these have drugs in their natural form. Are you getting it?
They can also occur in the synthetic form or in the manufactured form i.e they occur in the manufactured form. this category is what you are familiar with. OK. Good example of that is paracetamol, what about your aspirin?; What about albendazole? What about your mectizan? OK. All these are what? they are synthetic drugs. OK. They are manufactured. They do not occur in the natural form. Alright.
Now quickly let's talk about DRUG ADMINISTRATION. What is drug administration? When we are talking about drug administration we are simply explaining how drugs enter into the body. How does drug become part of your body? OK. And I'm going to be giving you three different means of drug administration. OK.
The first one is
1. Injection. OK. As you can see this man injecting himself with a drug which is a xenobiotic.
Are you getting what we are just trying to say? Injection is normally done by inserting injection syringe, OK, into veins and immediately the drug becomes part of the blood in the body because it is entering into the body almost immediately. OK. Right.
Another one is
2. Through Inhalation: As you can see this man is putting his drug in his nose, OK,
and is inhaling it. Are you getting what we are trying to say? And most of the time when people are smoking cigarette around you, the chemicals present inside that cigarette becomes part of your body through this inhalation. you inhale it. Are you getting what you are just trying to say?
And of course the third means of drug administration I am going to be mentioning here is
3. Through Ingestion: This one is very common. You have headache and you want to take paracetamol. OK. What you do is to put it in your mouth and use water to drink it and this simply ingestion. Are you getting it?
And this is simply the end of this class. In our next class we are going to be talking more on basic science. see you in our next class and make sure you don't miss that class.
